Sunday 2nd May 2021 – 10.59am
As the cars line up on the grid at Mallala Motorsport Park for the start of the Peter Hall Memorial 6-Hour Regularity Relay. Club member Helen Stephenson in her racing Hyundai Excel on pole with 3 other female drivers make up the “Driven Women” team. Behind them 22 other teams were eager for the flag to drop.
In the field over a quarter of the teams have a Sprite Club association. The Red Heifer Racing team with Gerard and Pat Miller, the Clubbies SA team “We’re in it for the Beer” , with David Tye, Rob Van Rob van Wageningen, Lee Kernich and Paul Rix making up the SA Sprite continginent.
With a change of COVID-19 and border restrictions allowed four Victorian Sprite Club Teams. Including “Darkside”, “All Brands”, “AHSDC Sprite Team 2”, and “Spritely Gentlemen’s Racing”. These teams included Sprites, Midgets, Sprite with funny motors, and other branded vehicles making up the numbers. Club Member Clive Spreadbury joined these teams with his Mk II Sprite.
Now some of these Victorian cars had their age creep up on them, with various diff and clutch issues. Two of the the team also celebrated their 75th birthdays as well on the Saturday.
11.00am – the flag drops and away they go!!
The cars have to try and lap within one second of their nominated time to gain a bonus lap, go too slow you only get one lap, go too fast you loose the lap, stay within the time window and you gain two laps! so smooth consistent driving helps consistant lap times. Traffic, faster cars, slower cars, and swapping the sash from car to car in the pits all add to the dilemma to maintain lap times.
To assist helpers from the Victorian and SA Sprite Clubs assisted over the weekend. This assistance is recognised by many:
Hi there SA Sprite Club,
I would like to place on record our sincere thanks for the support given to our AHSDC teams at the Peter Hall Memorial 6 hour relay recently. In particular David and Di Low, who assisted us on Sunday, and provided our volunteers to the MSCA for the event, and Dean King who was tireless in the garages helping with our numerous mechanical challenges on both Saturday and Sunday. We almost recruited him to one of the teams at one stage on Saturday!
Running our spritely cars in these long events is challenging for both the cars and drivers and the crew, and we appreciate the support we get from you.
We look forward to seeing you again next year!
Ruth Norris – Team Manager for The Spritely Gentlemen’s Racing Team and Team Goblin.
As usual the six hour throws all sorts of challenges to the teams, fuel, brake and clutch issues started to plague the teams. Strategies go out the window and just trying to work out what cars are running and ready for the circuit kept the TEam Managers active during the event.
Soon it is nearing 5.00pm, the bright sun had been in the drivers eyes for nearly one hour as they head down the start straight. This has kept the drivers on their toes for the last few minutes. Soon the clock ticks to 5.00pm, the chequered flag drops and the event is over.
Teams de-brief, crack a cold beer, put on a bbq and pack up the cars and equipment. The computer in the timing room starts it’s algorium processing and the results start to be printed for the Trophy presentation.
Well the Clubbies SA team was not last (and thats is good news), the Red Heifers were a few places higher. The Victorian teams were placed 2nd, 5th, 12th and 17th. The “Driven Women” ended up 9th overall. So the Sprite Teams recorded a great range of results, and now the Team Managers are looking to return for next year.
