Winter Has (Well and Truly) Arrived

Edit: Make that 7:30pm … not 8! One day I’ll get it right! Thanks Glen!

If you thought June seemed a little wetter than usual, you weren’t imagining it. Adelaide and indeed most of South Australia has launched into winter with enthusiasm, delivering rain, more rain, and the occasional brief intermission between showers.

For many Sprite and Midget owners, motoring this month has involved studying weather radar apps with the same attention normally reserved for workshop manuals. A surprising number of outings have become exercises in timing a run between rain bands.

The reward, of course, comes when the clouds part. Our little cars seem to relish cold winter air. The A Series engine loves a lung full of cold air mixed with fuel; the exhaust note sharpens, and the familiar crackle and burble sounds almost as though it is celebrating the arrival of denser air and cooler temperatures.

While the weather may have slowed some of our driving plans, the club calendar certainly hasn’t.

A reminder that our next General Meeting will be held on Monday 6 July at 7:30pm at the Fullarton Park Centre. As tradition dictates, July also brings our popular Mid-Winter Wine and Cheese Night, giving members another excellent reason to venture out on a winter evening. Contributions in the form of wine, cheese or other (mineral waters etc) gratefully received. If in doubt what to contribute, ask!!

With a bit of luck we’ll also hear from one of our members who will be discussing a tool that we all have and generally don’t use correctly that may prove useful in helping us better understand what is happening under the bonnet. Whether it reveals hidden horsepower or simply confirms that the problem is somewhere between the steering wheel and the driver’s seat remains to be seen…..

Don’t forget to keep an eye on the club calendar on the website for upcoming runs, meetings and events. With a little luck, July might even provide a few more opportunities to enjoy our cars without needing windscreen wipers on permanent duty.
