2022 will add a number of challenges to the Sprite Club and the Australia Day Picnic was to be the first. Minimal people at private residence were the rules, so the Committee and organisers had various discussions looking at alternatives. But as all good Sprite Club owners know we can work our way through the various problems that face us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The venue chosen was the grounds at Fullarton Park Community Centre, the weather was warm and humid, but no rain, 28 people attended, and there were a number of Sprites and Midgets in the carpark – so far so good!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finding a spot under a shady tree the various members soon became involved in conversations around the three “C’s” – COVID, Christmas and Catching up! While the sun did cause many to move their spot during the day, the shade and cool breeze added to the enjoyment of being outdoors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Soon people were diving into Eskies for lunch and a cleansing beverage ! This was followed up by a dessert of Adelaide Hills produce – Strawberries from Naine, Cherries supplied by the Beaton’s (yum!!) and ice cream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A few bonnets opened and many took a chance to have a look!. One vehicle that added to the Australia Day theme was the Holden EH Premier Station Wagon of Mike and Anne Schmidt -a lovely vehicle and a reminder of what many drove way back then. There was also Bugeyes of the Brines, Boyce and Cardones- without a roof for a change, the Mk II of the Leane’s, Mk III’s of Dean King and new member Gary Dodd, and the Midget of the Schmarr’s completed the Spridget entourage. The Rover P6B of the Michael and Pat added a British flavour to the car park as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A rustle of bucket and a flapping of thongs soon had the thong throwing competition under way. Very simple rules – stand at the appropriate mark, throw the thong, first into the bucket wins! Russel Schmarr did get it in the bucket on his first practice shot – but this was practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many different styles, angles, adjustments for side breezes and attempts still did not get the thong into the bucket. After Round One and no winner – the bucket was brought closer. Round Two – same result – a few close contacts with the bucket – but still the thong would not go in!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Round Three and a quick flick of the wrist had Fay Brock score the winning throw! This was the third time that Fay has won the coveted John and Judy Bowering Memorial Trophy! Congratulations Fay!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Soon people were packing their gear. loading their cars and heading home after an enjoyable day celebrating everything Australian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
